On 7 September, the Government announced a review of its plans to streamline local government which includes the withdrawal of its decision to replace Hampshire’s councils with four new unitary councils.

Councillor Gareth Williams, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council says: “I still believe that local government reorganisation and a unitary council combining the areas of Rushmoor, Hart and Basingstoke and Deane councils is the best solution for Rushmoor residents.

These changes to councils will determine how local services are delivered to residents for generations to come so it is vital that the Government’s review of the programme ensures the outcome delivers services that are fit for the future, responsive to local needs, and capable of supporting our communities in the years ahead.

“While the Government undertakes the review, councillors and officers at Rushmoor Borough Council will remain focused on ensuring that people who live and work in the borough continue to benefit from the priorities that we outlined in our 2026 – 28 Delivery Plan.

“I can confirm that this review will not affect the democratic process and that elections in Rushmoor will take place as normal in May 2027.

“I will continue to update residents on this review as more details are shared from central Government, but in the meanwhile please be assured of our continued support and commitment to our Borough.”
