FARNBOROUGH, UK – Planning permission for a state-of-the-art leisure centre in the heart of Farnborough town centre has been officially approved, marking a significant milestone for the local community. Granted by Rushmoor Borough Council’s Development Management Committee on Wednesday, March 11, the decision clears the path for construction to begin this summer. The project, which will be situated on the current Queensmead car park, is scheduled to start on-site in late June, with an anticipated completion and fit-out date in late 2027.
The new facility is designed to be a contemporary hub for health and activity, featuring a 25-metre swimming pool and a learner pool with a moveable floor to accommodate various skill levels. Fitness enthusiasts will have access to a gym with over 100 stations, including specialist power-assisted equipment for those with limited mobility. The centre will also house dedicated studio spaces, a spin studio, a soft play area for children, and a café. Beyond the building itself, the development includes a new outdoor play area, extensive landscaping, and improved parking facilities, with a modern replacement car park planned for the former Pinehurst site.
In a strategic move to ensure long-term success, the council has appointed Everyone Active as the leisure contractor to manage the new facility. This partnership, effective from April 1, allows the operator to contribute their expertise to the final design and fit-out stages. As part of their commitment, Everyone Active will also invest in a new splash pad at the Aldershot Lido, likely to be introduced in 2029, alongside a comprehensive health and wellbeing programme designed to help residents improve their overall fitness.
Councillor Sophie Porter, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Healthy Communities and Active Lives, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting that the council remained firm in its commitment to delivering a facility that is both high-quality and affordable. She highlighted that this approval was the final hurdle needed to bring an accessible, modern leisure centre to the town centre for all residents to enjoy. As work commences, the Queensmead car park will close in late June, with The Meads multi-storey serving as the primary parking option during the construction period. Residents can stay updated on the project’s progress via the council’s dedicated website.
